MEDU takes in $4M to develop reusable personal protective equipment
According to Greenhealth, hospitals produce more than 5 million tonnes of garbage annually in otherwise typical circumstances. Over the past two years, there has been a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), and it has been widely reported that some people have resorted to reusing items like medical gowns that are generally single-use.
MEDU aims to lessen this waste and replace single-use medical apparel. This is done by developing a line of reusable, sustainable items like surgical gowns, head covers, and full-body suits.
Formation Of MEDU
CEO Tamara Chayo, a scientist and Thiel Fellow, founded the business in 2020 after seeing the demand for PPE personally while working with her family in the medical and textile industries. She and her team started looking into fabrics to discover which ones could catch viruses, and when they started receiving encouraging lab test results, they founded MEDU.
She told TechCrunch that the fabrics used to make the garments are level 4 AAMI PB70 approved, the greatest level of fluid and microbiological barrier protection, offering the best level of defense against particles, viruses, and germs.
Technology Behind The PPE
Doctors indicated that the PPE was comfortable for them. MEDU made a lot of alterations to the exixtinging one. They finally came up with a product which could be reused 50 times. Using the same gown rather than switching to a different one would save money and reduce waste.
Healthcare professionals are alerted via a mobile app on how many times a gown has been washed, to calculate those 50 washes, Thanks to embedded near-field communication (NFC) technology in the clothing. After 50 uses, the garment is returned to MEDU facilities where it is cleaned, transformed into scrubs, and used to create environmentally friendly packaging.
The business is profitable and keeps increasing its monthly revenue by a factor of six. It has deployed about 7,000 pieces of equipment since January, which is the same as 3 million single-use items.
The company wants to replace over 20 million single-use PPE gowns by the end of 2022. It also aims to9 divert 6,000 tonnes of hospital trash from landfills or incinerators. Additionally, the company has expanded by a factor of two and now collaborates with hospitals in Los Angeles and New York.
Conclusion:
MEDU is a vibrant and forward-thinking startup that is ready for further expansion and success. With a focus on financial technology, design, and marketing, as well as a dedication to CSR, MEDU is well-positioned to excel in its industry and have a long-lasting effect on the lives of its clients.
